Pricing by the Inch

Here's something interesting, an artist pricing his work, roughly, by the inch. This would leave someone like moi, working in the same size, over and over again, basically, the width and length of a computer keyboard, quite out of luck.

6 x 9 inches $1250.00 CAD | USD | EUR
8 x 10 inches $2100.00 CAD | USD | EUR
9 x 12 inches $2200.00 CAD | USD | EUR

12 x 20 inches $4000.00 CAD | USD | EUR
14 x 18 inches $4100.00 CAD | USD | EUR
16 x 20 inches $5000.00 CAD | USD | EUR
18 x 24 inches $6200.00 CAD | USD | EUR
20 x 24 inches $6400.00 CAD | USD | EUR
20 x 30 inches $7600.00 CAD | USD | EUR
22 x 28 inches $8300.00 CAD | USD | EUR
24 x 30 inches $9900.00 CAD | USD | EUR

36 x 54 inches $33000.00 CAD | USD | EUR
36 x 72 inches $43000.00 CAD | USD | EUR
50 x 60 inches $50000.00 CAD | USD | EUR
60 x 60 inches $62000.00 CAD | USD | EUR
60 x 72 inches $74000.00 CAD | USD | EUR

So the artist above is selling his work by the inch, meanwhile, below, a call goes out for donated art to a "good cause" . However, this occurs to me. Few artists are pricing their work between $98 and $168 and if art is to be valued and considered valuable, how can one be expected to under-price their work? The above artist prices his 8 X 10 works at $2,100. If he donated a canvas this size, it would sell for only $68.00. Possible, there might be an auction and the art starts at this figure but even then, is it possible that the bidding would reach $2,100.00?

I have no idea how the art world is reconciles this.

Ottawa School of Art’s Fall Fundraiser:

SMALL MEDIUM LARGE

We are proud to announce Ottawa School of Art’s (OSA) annual fall fundraiser Small Medium Large is back!

In order to maintain OSA’s programs we are holding a fundraising event on Friday November 23rd 2012, to raise money for our Bursary Program. The Bursary Program targets low-income students unable to pay for tuition to regular programs at the school. With a focus on youth, 80% of the program is devoted to children and youth. The Bursary Program is in need of funds in order to assist these students and make a difference in their lives; help us make a mark!

Donate a work of art to our event named Small Medium Large, taking on an Asian flavor to the evening combining the worlds of Chinatown’s take-out restaurants and the OSA’s art gallery, we will create an exciting mixture of art sales and delicious Asian treats sponsored by the Chinatown BIA.
